Tibetan Mastiff sold at a Chinese pet fair for $2Million

The dog is man’s best friend. There is no denying that dogs have been so well loved, people willingly splash money to avail of the best brands and even hotel perks for their pets. But would you spend $2Million to purchase a dog? Apparently, someone in China just did.

According to washingtonpost.com:

A Tibetan Mastiff — an ancient breed of dog that looks more lion than canine — just went for nearly $2 million at a Chinese “luxury pet fair” in the eastern province of Zhejiang, Agence France-Presse reports.

The majestic pet was bought by an unnamed 56 year old property developer from Qingdao for 12 million yuan or $2 Million. Pure Tibetan mastiffs are said to be very rare, which explains the high price for these pets. In 2011, a red mastiff named Big Splash was sold for $1.6 Million, only to be topped by the recent purchase on Tuesday.

Tibetan Mastiffs do look more of a lion than a dog and they have an expensive diet of organic food (organic diet of tripe, boiled fish heads, powdered egg shells, code liver oil and raw bones). Here are a few more facts about the Tibetan Mastiffs:

  • they have few genetic health problems as compared to other breeds
  • 20 stone was the weight of the heaviest Tibetan Mastiff
  • they can live up to 14 years
  • they can only have 1 little a year
  • in the UK, there are only about 300 Tibetan Mastiffs and a puppy costs about £1,000 (about $1600) for a puppy
  • it is thought that the Tibetan Mastiff hails from the lineage of the wolf, genetically diverging about 58,000 years ago.
